What is mineral water?

Mineral water from natural springs commonly has a high content of calcium carbonate, magnesium sulfate, potassium, and sodium sulfate. It may also be impregnated with such gases as carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulfide. Mineral water is produced artificially by adding salts to distilled water or aerating it with carbon dioxide. The mineral content of both natural and artificial mineral water varies greatly, and in some cases it may be less than that of ordinary tap water.

Since ancient times people have bathed in water from mineral springs, especially hot springs, because of its supposed therapeutic value for rheumatism, arthritis, skin diseases, and various other ailments. Many such springs have become sites for health spas and resorts, some of the most famous of which are Bath, Somerset, England; Baden-Baden and Wiesbaden, Germany; and Saratoga Springs, New York. The use of mineral water as a beverage has increased greatly since the mid-1970s. Large quantities of bottled water from mineral springs in France, Italy, and other European countries are exported each year.

Mineral water comes from natural underground reservoirs and mineral springs, giving it a higher mineral content than tap water. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), mineral water must contain at least 250 parts per million of total dissolved solids. The FDA prohibit these manufacturers from adding minerals to their products. Minerals that are often present in mineral water include:

 potassium

 zinc

Unlike tap water, mineral water is bottled at the source. Some people prefer mineral water due to its perceived purity and the lack of chemical disinfection treatments.

However, mineral water may undergo some processing. This can include adding or removing carbon dioxide (CO2) gas or eliminating toxic substances, such as arsenic.

CO2 helps prevent oxidation and limits bacterial growth in mineral water. Naturally carbonated water gets its CO2 from the source. Manufacturers can also infuse their water with CO2 after extraction.

The FDA definition is water from a protected underground source that contains 250 parts per millions of dissolved solids. Anything less than this, from the same type of origin, would be deemed spring water. Logically, the dissolved solids, in this case, are minerals such as calcium, zinc, magnesium, silica, sodium, and sulfur.

Mineral Water Process Details


The direct consumption of raw water is considered unfit for drinking as it may contain living microorganisms. Also raw water may hold ferrous compounds which can get oxidized to ferric oxide. They then settle down in the storage tank thus increasing the water woes. In order to solve this challenge, GIECL offers an incredible technology called the Hypochlorite dosing system, which is used for this purpose. About 3-4 ppm of sodium hypochlorite solution is dosed in raw water storage tank. The solution reacts with water to form a hypo chlorite acids which ultimately acts as a disinfecting agent.


For this purpose we provide one no of HDPE hypochlorite solution preparation tank along with one dosing pump. From the required suction and the discharge pipe work in pvc construction to isolation valves, we provide all the equipment’s along with our machineries. The dosage rate is accustomed as per the actual requirement, which may vary on case to case basis.


One No. of Raw water is mandatory for storing the chlorinated water having appropriate capacity. The tanks we supply are fitted with PVC pipe work & isolation valves and the appropriate type of level indicator.


A Horizontal Centrifugal type of pump designed using Stainless Steel helps in
supplying a large proportion of Raw water to Pressure Sand Filter Unit. This Raw Water Supply Pump is also provided along with our machineries. We also provide necessary Suction / discharge pipe work designed using stainless steel along with isolation valves. They are provided up to PSF Unit.


Raw Water is first filtered using a filtration mechanism which uses a filtration unit in series prior feeding R.O.Plant. Pressure Sand Filter Unit is also provided which is an efficient method for the removal of suspended matters & turbidity from raw water. PSF Unit it is fitted with bottom collecting system internally and is a SS vertical Pressure Vessel. Uniform grades silica quartz sand is charged on the supporting media of pebbles and gravels. This unit is fitted with SS frontal pipe work and Multiport Valve externally. During service cycle water is passed in downward direction through sand bed, as a result of which the suspended matter & turbid particles get entrapped and thus get separated. Over a period of time, sand bed gets blocked due to suspended matters which lead to higher pressure drop and lesser flow. Thus a stage arrives where the filter bed needs to be backwashed.

When pressure drop across the sand bed crosses the specified limit (0.5 kg/cm²) or quality of filtered water determinates, whichever is earlier. Regeneration process involves backwash & rinsing of Sand Bed as below. For backwashing function to be carried out, water is allowed to pass in reverse direction of service cycle to loosen the filtering media bed. Due to this, entrapped suspended matters detach themselves and comes out along with effluent water. Backwashing mechanism is carried out for about 10- 15 minutes or till the effluent coming out is clear.

For Rinsing of Sand Bed:

Service water is made to pass in the downward direction to settle down the sand bed. The effluent water is drained for about 5 minutes time to ensure all unclear water is drained down.

Water derived from natural source may contain visible impurities, smell and bacteria in different proportion, which make the water, unfit for any kind of usage, and hence, it is essential to eliminate the same from water. If raw water is chlorinated for die-infection, it is necessary to remove the free Chlorine before feeding into R.O System. The R.O. Membranes get damaged due to Chlorine which is a strong oxidizing agent. Activated Carbon is the right solution for eliminating Chlorine, Odor, &Colour by passing the water through carbon bed. The Carbon granules will specifically absorb organics present in water as they have large surface. ACF Unit is a FRP pressurized upright vessel which has built in strainer on the base depositing system. This equipment is fitted with SS frontal pipe & MPV work extrinsically. A granular activated carbon is charged on the supporting media of Coarse & Fine Silex. While treating feed water, it flows vertically through Carbon Bed that separates Chlorine & bad smell from water.

As the pressure threshold within the Carbon Bed surpasses the specified limit of (0.8 kg/cm²) or quality of treated water degenerates, whichever is earlier the equipment is set aside for regeneration. The reconstruction involves, backwashing & flushing of Carbon Bed. After repeated use, the quality of carbon
deteriorates. One can keep a keen eye on this through regular laboratory testing. Specifically regarding the iodine value which is the most crucial element for this application. It is the general practice to replace activated Carbon granules every year.


The feed water containing high Chlorine content may oxidize the RO membrane and as a precautionary measure we have provided Sodium MetaBiSulphitedosing system Dosage rate is 4-5 mg/liter which prevents this corrosion. A HDPE chemical preparation tank with an electronics diaphragm design dosing pump is used to achieve this technique.


The presence of calcium, magnesium and other hard salts may get deposited if concentration exceeds its solubility limit, damaging the membranes greatly resulting into scaling that will eventually lead to sub grade treated water quality from R.O. System. To avoid such situation this anti scalantdosing (scale inhibitor) system is set in place. Generally a (scale inhibitor) like Perma care 191 or parallel chemical is mixed in feed water. Dosage rate is 4-5 mg/liter. A HDPE chemical mixture tank with an electronic diaphragm type disposing pump is fixed for this.


Our Micron Cartridge Filter include various Series of filtration capacities with the 20 Micron , 10 Micron , 5 Micron , 1 Micron , 0.45 Micron & 0.2 Micron Nominal and Absolute Micron Cartridge. This is a Disposable Cartridge and after the specified period of use, it should be replaced. This should be followed to ensure top quality of your Product water as it comes through the specific filtration path. There is a possibility of slippages for any particles which can be stop through the Cartridge also 1,0.45, 0.2 micron cartridge. This kind of filter cartridges will also take care of Bacteriological growth up to 0.2 micron.


The water pressure should be accelerated which going through Reverse Osmosis Process. To meet this requirement a Vertical Multistage Centrifugal High Pressure Pump in S.S design is provided R.O. System demands operating pressure of about 14-16 kg/cm². High-pressure pump is fixed with S.S. discharge pipe system having control valves to keep a check on pressure. Essential components like a High
Pressure Switch, Pressure Gauge and re-circulation valves are all put in place ensuring that the whole system worked safely and methodically.


Reverse Osmosis System throws out nearly 97 – 99% of total dissolved contaminants by the principle of `Osmosis’. This equipment consists of a R.O. Module assembly set on top of the M.S.Skid. A FRP Pressure Vessel with high pressure is fitted on the skid that contains spirally twisted membrane elements in order.

The soften treated water coming out of the RO System feed gets divided into Product & Reject water streams. The Product water is fit for consumption having minimal TDS. Reject water on the other hand is highly concentrated water, is absolutely unfit for any kind of usage. Raw water is first fed to first Pressure Vessel at high speed and softened water is accumulated in center core tube. Softened water from every membrane is gathered jointly in a common product water storage tank and water unfit for use is drained.


The Treated water from R.O. System is collected in ourcustomized S.S. designed storage tank based on the required capacity. The tank is fitted with S.S. pipe system & isolation valves and appropriate kind of level indicator. A single transfer pump made of S.S. material of construction comes fitted in each tank to feed the softened water in MCF.

This filter is an S.S.316 Vessel fitted intrinsically with P.P spun micron cartridge elements having absolute ratings of 1.0 micron & 0.2 microns. This can successfully eliminate all bacterial contaminants present in the water and make the water free of impurities of all kinds


R.O. treated water does not contain any kind of micro-biological impurities like Bacteria, Virus, etc. But there is a possibility of them developing again in water if it is left in storage for a long time. To prevent such kind of redevelopment of contaminants in water it is vital for Reverse Osmosis Application to be administered prior to Filling & Sealing in containers. Thus, a built in Ultra Violet Sterilizer is facilitated for disinfecting of R.O. treated water prior to filling in sterilized PET Bottles. Stored water to be disinfected, channels through U.V. System that contains of U.V. Tubes which radiates high intensity Ultra Violet Rays that can destroy the micro organisms. which might have developed in stagnant water. This equipment contains a S.S finished container having Ultraviolet Lamps fitted in it. The water surrounds these tubes during disinfection process. An electrical system is used for generation of high voltage essential for U.V. Ray’s production.


The feed water that is treated with R.O. System will be free of all the micro – organisms like bacterial & virus and the U.V. System will reaffirm the quality of the water when it is fed into bottles. But there are slight chances of redeveloping contaminants in packed bottles when stored for long time. Hence, it is essential to disinfect R.O treated water before bottle filling. This final step is as important as the rest of them to supplying top Mineral Water Quality as per the set standards. This Ozone Generator is the equipment that provides Oxygen Rich water by removing the Bacteriological growth. At the same time, it extends the Shelf Life of your Packed Bottle water as long as it remained sealed. The Ozonation process of water induces some taste to the softened and packaged water.


This is used to meet the requirement of ppm Ozone gas mixture in finish product water. Within the ozone re-circulating tank the pump is used to re-circulate the softened water. Advantage of ozone install outlet of Pump within suction ozone aids the mix-up of static mixer. This tank is fitted with one no. of re-circulating pump and one no. of treated water transfer pump to the filling section.
